Wondering why Andy Warhol’s painting of a can of Campbell’s soup recently sold at auction for $11.7 million dollars? Curious about how a blank canvas ended up on the wall of one of the world’s most prestigious museums? Skeptical about the art-world awe inspired by a pile of rocks? Dubious about how a hardware-store fluorescent bulb turns into art when someone slaps a gallery label next to it? Then take a deep dive into the American contemporary art scene of the 1960s. We’ll learn about the major art movements of the decade — from Pop Art to Minimalism to Conceptual Art to Environmental Art and beyond – we’ll look at lots and lots of art together, and we’ll figure out what it all means. No art history background necessary. (You don’t even have to like soup!)
